Use A Powerful 1,000Watt HPS Bulb For Indoor Gardening
High pressure sodium light bulbs, also known as HPS bulbs, are popular with those that practice indoor gardening, either in the home or in a commercial greenhouse situation. HPS bulbs are part of the HID, or high intensity discharge, series of light bulbs, and they are noted for producing a very bright light useful for imitating natural sunlight in an indoor growing setting. A 1,000 watt HPS bulb is a particularly bright light bulb that benefits plant production on several levels.
As the name implies, sodium gas is used inside a 1,000 HPS bulb, and it is the sodium gas that gives the light emitted from a 1,000 HPS bulb its red spectrum color. Red color-spectrum light is useful for inducing a mature plant to reproduce, or getting it to produce flowers, fruits or vegetables. It can be used in conjunction with a light bulb that offers blue color-spectrum light, which is used to help younger plants that need to grow vegetative growth do so more easily. Both of these types of color-spectrum light are useful in indoor gardening, depending on where your plants are at in their growth cycles. Sunlight, of course, offers all of the colors in the spectrum, and thus the indoor gardener’s goal is to recreate natural sunlight as much as possible, but without wasting money on color spectrums that plants cannot use, such as the green color spectrum.
Your 1,000 HPS bulb will also need a ballast for correct operation. HID lights of many varieties require the use of a ballast, and modern digital ballasts help the 1,000 watt HPS bulb to provide the correct electrical current to the grow light, so it has enough power to give off a bright light, without so much power that it can damage the light bulb.
A 1,000w HPS bulb produces a great deal of bright light suitable for growing plants. Although you can purchase these grow lights in smaller wattage sizes, the 1,000 HPS bulb will cover a large square foot area needing light while producing the bright light your plants need for photosynthesis purposes. A 1,000w HPS bulb can also be used in conjunction with a reflector. Your 1,000 HPS bulb will be able to spread its bright light over a larger number of square feet when a reflector is in place, and can help to save on the overall number 1,000w HPS bulbs you will need.
