How do you calculate the pH when the buffer has exceeded capacity?
This is the problem
Buffer consists of 100 mL of 0.02M HoAc and 0.015M NaoAc. What is the pH after the addition of 15 mL of 0.15M NaOH?
Moles acid = 0.100 L x 0.02 M = 0.002
moles acetate = 0.100 L x 0.015 M = 0.0015
Moles NaOH = 0.015 x 0.15 =0.00225
CH3COOH + OH- >> CH3COO- + H2O
moles CH3COO- produced = 0.002
moles OH- in excess = 0.00025
total volume = 0.115 L
[OH-] = 0.00025 / 0.115 = 0.00217
pOH = 2.66
pH = 11.3
