Do low watt bulbs run cooler than higher watt bulbs?
I am designing a lamp shade made from recycled plastics and I am concerned about the plastic melting when lit for extended periods of time. I have always been confused by the concept of watts vs amperage etc and I don’t know if the current flowing through the light fixture has anything to do with how hot the lamp can possibly get. Will using a lower watt bulb help in protecting my shade from melting and scorching? When answering please indicate your authority on this subject.
Yes, lower wattage bulbs are cooler. Only a tiny percentage of the energy coming out of a light bulb is light, the rest is heat. That’s why you can have an incandescent bulb give a certain amount of light, and compact fluorescent bulb give the same amount of light for 1/3 the power. Or an LED light for 1/10 the power. In the case of the LED, it’s just 90% less heat.
If you look at small lamp fixtures, you will often see a fixture that says “60 watts maximum” or some other figure. That’s entirely for heat reasons.
